Kahoot! Learning assessment in Chinese class

In this 50min lesson, the first 45 minutes were used to teach knowledge about Chinese festivals like 春节, 清明节, 元宵节, etc. For the last five minutes, Kahoot! was used to review the new knowledge while playing the game. Kahoot!, developed by the company in Norway, is a game-based platform that allows user to create and play fun quiz games via web browser. In the video tutorial, I show what it looks like and how teachers can create their own games.

Kahoot! makes the learning assessment for students not only enjoyable but it also protects learners from public exposure. While students can see both their own and their peers’ scores, they do not see the other students’ answers. Thus, it gives some privacy to the players and generates motivation among the learners to win.

Furthermore, Kahoot! provides immediate feedback to both students and teachers. For each question, when time runs out, it shows the right answer and the number of right or wrong answers from players in a bar graph. Students can correct themselves if they chose the wrong one, and as the game’s moderator, I will know how many of my students have acquired the lesson’s knowledge in the class. This allows me to provide more instruction on the weak ones.

Finally, assessing the students’ learning through Kahoot! saves the teacher a lot of time and energy. Kahoot! allows instructors to share their games, as long as they make them public. If you are teaching Chinese festivals as well, you could go to the game I developed and use it in your classroom! See link in side bar.

As for disadvantages, Kahoot! requires students to use laptops or mobile devices that connected to the Internet. Therefore, it is not available in classrooms without the Internet or enough digital devices.
